Design of a Fuzzy Traffic Controller for ATM Networksusing Genetic AlgorithmsGokulakrishnan. T v Jagakarthikeyan. K w Karthik. N x Vikram. V
This project examines the possibility of applying genetic algorithms in the simultaneous design of membership functions and rule sets of a fuzzy traffic controller that performs Usage Parameter Control (Traffic Policing) in Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) networks. In ATM networks, one of the most critical functions is ‘policing’, which has the task of ensuring that each user complies with the traffic parameters negotiated in the call setup to avoid network congestion. This function is difficult to implement because of the conflicting requirements such as selectivity and responsiveness. A policing mechanism based on fuzzy logic has the capacity to combine a high degree of responsiveness with a selectivity close to that of an ideal policer. However, the design of a fuzzy policer requires expert knowledge in the field. The proposed method leads to the development of rule sets or high performance membership functions for the fuzzy policer without the need of human input in the design loop.
