Inclement weather and road construction have always been an issue for drivers, especially in Michigan. Different tools have been used in the past to inform drivers of upcoming road conditions, either caused by nature or by humans themselves, yet nothing has been able to give drivers that information directly from their vehicle. Project SWIM (Street and Weather Information Mainframe) aims to bring drivers this information as well as diagnostic information about their car.
Project SWIM is an information retrieval and propagation system designed to allow drivers to see present and upcoming road conditions as well as pertinent information regarding the driver's vehicle. These conditions can range anywhere from serious weather hazards (fog, ice, rain, etc), to dense traffic, to constuction. This system will use both external and internal sensors to gather this information, and then display it using a Heads Up Display in the windshield of the vehicle. The driver may also choose to send information regarding their vehicle to their e-mail or another server for maintenance purposes.
