CSE 472 Honors Option

If you are a member of the Honors college, you can get an H-Option for this course.  The requirements are:

  1. You must receive a grade of 3.5 or 4.0.
  2. You must complete one of the H-Option alternatives listed below.
  3. You must indicate your wish to complete the H-Option by February 1, 2008.

If you are interested in completing the H-Option, please see me and indicate which alternative you wish to pursue.  There may be additional paperwork that must be processed at that time.  I can help you with resources for these ideas.

H-Option Alternatives

1.  Implement an example of inverse kinematics.  You might create a dancing robot or some other character where the position of the limbs is dependent on some fixed points that specify the locations of feet, hands, etc.

2.  Implement a simple skeletal animation example where the body surface is deformed by the movement of joints.

3.  Implement subsurface scattering in a ray tracer.  A partial implementation of the BSSRDF model implementing either the dipoles or the single scattering is sufficient.  (I will consider a two-person team on this project for a full implementation).

4.  Create a ray-traced movie that includes motion blur.

5.  Create a ray-traced movie with a talking character including lip synchronization.

6.  Implement a simple example of 3D physics such as items bouncing around or bowling.

7.  Implement a stochastic ray tracer with lighting that has physical areas associated with it.

8.  Create a simple mixed reality movie, where graphical objects are registered with physical objects in the scene.

I may add addition items as I think of them...

Notice:  If you have a specific interest area not covered by one of these options, please feel free to discuss it with me and we can create a custom option for you.
