CSE/CJ 429 Short Paper
Two movies capture some important concepts for this class.
This assignment has you analyze two movies with respect
to cybersecurity and privacy issues.
Write a page or two on each movie
(maximum of two-pages on each movie, i.e. max four pages total.)
1. "Minority Report" looks to a high-tech future where the government
watches over the population. There are privacy implications in their
approach. Authentication is important and issues such as false accept,
false reject and revocation play key roles in the movie plot.
Analyze the movie with respect to cybersecurity and privacy.
Some questions you might consider as a starting point, but you need not limit
yourself to these.
Both the crime prediction and authentication systems are assumed to be
essentially perfect.
i. What is the problem with depending on a "perfect" system?
ii. In each case, how is such a perfect system circumvented?
iii. Finally, what happens when a 'perfect' system is not perfect?
iv. What does that tell you about how authentication systems should be deployed?

2. "The Sting" looks back to the early twentieth century, and it examines
a world of con men. Some of these same cons exist in the cyber world.
a. Identify cons in the movie.
b. Map cons in the movie to online scams (not all will map to the Internet,
but certainly the finale does). Point out what is the same
and what is different between the con in the movie and online
scams. In particular, what about the Internet makes the scam easier.
