INTRODUCTION TO THE CSE INSTRUCTIONAL SYSTEM The Department of Computer Science and Engineering manages a computing system which is used by students in CSE courses. The CSE IN system is a distributed computing environment consisting of a number of Sun Microsystems fileservers running the UNIX operating system, as well as UNIX, Linux and Windows workstations. The fileservers are named after oceans and seas (for example, "arctic", and "pacific"), while the workstations are named after other objects, such as plants, animals, and minerals. You can access the CSE IN system at a number of rooms managed by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in the Engineering Building. Sun workstations (UNIX): 3350 and 3352 EB Dell workstations (Linux): 3353 EB Dell workstations (Windows): 3203, 3320 and 3340 EB In addition, you can access the CSE IN system at some of the rooms managed by the Case Center, the Computer Laboratory, and other campus departments. Additional information is available as part of the Department's website: http://www.cse.msu.edu/facility/ Please note the Acceptable Use Policy published on that website. ***** CSE IN Accounts ***** To use the CSE IN system, you must have an authorized account. When you enroll in a CSE course, you will be assigned an individual account (consisting of a "username" and a "password") which allows you to access any of the fileservers and workstations. Normally, your CSE IN username will be the same as your Pilot (MSU e-mail) username, and your password will be your MSU PID (beginning with the letter 'A'). If you are unable to access your CSE IN account, please see one of the Teaching Assistants. The first time that you access your account on the CSE IN system, you will be prompted to change your password. You should select a password that is not easily guessed by other users, such as an arbitrary set of characters that has special meaning to you. After you change your password, you will automatically be logged off the system. Please wait for a minute or two before accessing your account again while the CSE IN system is updating the central database with your new password. Subsequently, whenever you want to access the CSE IN system, you will enter your personal username and password. Any files which you create will be saved under your home directory. You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account and files. Use the command "passwd" frequently (at least once a month) to change your password on the CSE IN system.
