IT professionals stand to benefit from the skills shortage in terms ofhigher salaries. Employers continue to raise salaries, and offer bonusesand flexible work schedules because they are having a difficult timefilling positions with qualified candidates. A new study by IT staffingconsultant Robert Half International and CareerBuilder.com indicates thatfinding qualified candidates has become as or more difficult than a yearago for 81 percent of hiring managers. And professional and technicalstaff-level positions are causing the most problems for hiring managers. The demand for highly-skilled workers has nearly 40 percent of hiringmanagers considering raising salaries in the next year to lure talentedstaff-level candidates. Forty-five percent of workers reported theircompensation has increased in the last year, yet a much smaller number arewilling to ask for a better deal going forward, likely due to insecuritiesabout the United States economy and job market, saysCareerBuilder.com CEO Matt Ferguson. Workers who are not maximizing the earning potential ofthose opportunities are literally selling themselves short.
