Currently, I am a Ph.D. Candidate working with Dr. Philip McKinley in the Computer Science and Engineering at Michigan State University. In my research, I use evolutionary optimization with adaptive control to design robotic systems capable of handling uncertainty – both environmental and internal. I prototype most of my techniques using robotic fish, though, all of my methods are meant to be generally applied to any autonomous robotic system.
My research is enhanced by the BEACON Center, which studies all aspects of biological and artificial evolution. Through BEACON, I routinely interact with biologists, such as those in the Boughman Lab, and engineers, Dr. Xiaobo Tan, that study fish (both living and robotic) from different perspectives.
