Weng's EI Lab Teams With AVS for DARPA Grand Challenge
MSU's Embodied Intelligence lab has joined forces with Autonomous
Vehicle Systems for the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge, a race where
autonomous robotic ground vehicles navigate a demanding course
through the Mojave Desert that includes natural and man-made obstacles.
The September issue of Wired magazine reports AVS's vehicle Flying
Fox as a top contender, crediting John Weng's research as its
"edge." The 1987 military diesel Humvee will be equipped with a
biologically motivated adaptive vision system for obstacle avoidance.
The 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge will be held on October 8, 2005 in
the Southwestern United States. The first team whose vehicle
autonomously navigates 150 miles of grueling desert terrain within
ten hours will receive two million dollars.
