Chai and Ferreira receive new award from NSF

Joyce Chai and Fernanda Ferreira (Psychology) have received a 3-year research grant through the Division of Information and Intelligent Systems (IIS) within the Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) at the National Science Foundation. The title of the project is: Eye Gaze in Salience Modeling for Robust Spoken Language Understanding. This project seeks to improve automated spoken language interpretation in conversational interfaces through a salience-based framework with two objectives: (1) to understand the role of eye gaze in human language production and its implications in salience modeling for automated input interpretation; and 2) to develop algorithms and systems that apply computational gaze-based salience modeling to robust spoken language understanding.
