Joachim M. Buhmann is a Professor of Information Science and Engineering at the Institute of Computational Science at ETH Zurich. He received a Ph.D degree in theoretical physics from the Technical University of Munich in 1988. He held postdoctoral positions at the University of Southern California and at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. His current research interest covers statistical pattern recognition and applications to image analysis and bioinformatics. Special research topics include statistical learning theory for unsupervised learning, data clustering and data visualization, active data selection, stochastic optimization techniques, image segmentation, shape analysis and statistical methods for bioinformatics.

Patrick J. Flynn received the Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1990 from Michigan State University. He taught at Notre Dame from 1990-1991, Washington State from 1991-1998, and Ohio State from 1998-2001. He returned to Notre Dame in 2001 where he is currently Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering and Concurrent Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering. His research interests include image-based biometrics, computer vision, image processing, and computer graphics. His research on these and other topics has been supported by NSF, ONR, NASA, AFRL, and DARPA, as well as Honda, Intel, Boeing, Sverdrup, the Washington Technology Center and the Ohio Board of Regents. Dr. Flynn is a past Associate Editor and past Associate Editor-in-Chief of IEEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, and has also served on the editorial board of Pattern Recognition. He is a Senior Member of IEEE.
