Windows Terminal Service or Remote Desktop

The department has set up "Microsoft Terminal Services" for faculty, staff, and student use. In this help file we will list the programs we installed on the terminal server and explain how to use the service. If you have any questions, feel free to email our manager group at manager@cse.msu.edu. We thank Microsoft, Inc. (Reseach Group) for their donations of software and licenses that made this service possible.

As usual, your CSE home space is mapped as the H: drive after login. If you need to access the research space, please manually map "\\coral\research{\%faculty-name%}" (\%faculty-name% is optional) to one available drive id.

List of programs installed

MS-Office 2000 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, FrontPage and Access), MS-Visio 2000

MS-VisualStudio .Net 2003

SSH Secure Shell

Basic productivity apps like Acrobat, Browsers, etc

Connection Setup

This Remote Desktop Client is installed by default on Windows XP.

click Start -> Accessories -> Communications -> Remote Desktop Client

Connect to: tsserv.cse.msu.edu
You can change the display to be smaller if you would rather not have it full screen.
Be sure to log into the CSE Domain.

In case of network up and down (e.g. your phone-line dialup hangup), your connection may be lost. You can reconnect to it and all your session is kept alive, which means you will not suffer any loss because of network fluctuatings. Please always remember to logoff when you are done, even if you are accidentally disconnected. That will free up resources and licenses for other people. You may choose to disconnect youself when you want to make a phone call and come back to that session later.

Those of you on a *nix platform, rdesktop.org works well. Follow their docs and connect to tsserv.cse.msu.edu
