On Sunday May 23rd the CSE department's SMB (Windows network file
service) server (samba) will begin using NT-style encrypted passwords.
For frequent users of this service, this change will be transparent.
For non-users or infrequent users this could cause an inability to
authenticate against the SMB server (and *ONLY* the SMB server --
normal Unix authentication will remain unchanged). Users who have
problems authenticating to the SMB server after this date (ie. May
23rd) will need to change their password on a CSE instructional Unix
system (arctic, or pacific, for example) using the standard Unix
'passwd' command. This command will update your SMB (NT-style)
encrypted password and your Unix password. Thereafter you should be
able to login as before to either system with the same password.
Problems should be reported to manager@cse.msu.edu. Thank you for
your patience as we make this change.
