In Gray, Buhusi, and Schmajuk (The transition from automatic 
to controlled processing. Neural Networks, 10, 1257-1268, 1997), we 
describe a neural network model that, during learning, changes from 
controlled (conscious, voluntary) to automatic (unconscious, involuntary) 
processing of information. 
We identify some brain structures that would participate in 
the process. Our neural network builds on and extends some concepts 
introduced by Pearce and Hall (1981).
