Scholarship established to honor Professor Moon-Jung Chung

 

The Korean Computer Scientists and Engineers Association in America (KOCSEA) recently created a scholarship to commemorate the late Professor Moon-Jung Chung. The scholarship recognizes outstanding Korean and Korean-American students studying Computer Science and related areas in the U.S., who have excelled in academics, demonstrated potential for making significant contributions in the discipline and for becoming a leader in the IT industry.

Chung was an internationally renowned scholar, teacher, and mentor who cared deeply about his students. In addition to mentoring numerous MS and undergraduate students, he was advisor to twelve PhD students. He taught courses in computational theory, parallel systems, algorithms, and data structures. His research has had a transformational effect on industry and manufacturing. Chung joined the MSU department of Computer Science and Engineering in 1987 and served until his death in October 2005.

To apply for the scholarship,the application materials should be sent to the KOCSEA scholarship committee chair, Dr. Jungwoo Ryoo at jryoo@psu.edu or Dr. Jungwoo Ryoo 163 LRC 3000 Ivyside Park, Altoona, PA 16601. Please, ensure that the two recommendation letters are sent directly to Dr. Ryoo.

  2. Moon-Jung Chung Scholarship (1):       $1,000

  Eligibility

  1. Undergraduate or graduate Korean and Korean-American students studying (more than two semesters left prior to graduation) Computer Science and related areas in the U.S.
  2. KOCSEA membership (Students may apply for KOCSEA membership at the time of scholarship application through www.kocsea.net )

  Application Materials

  1. KOCSEA scholarship application form
  2. Curriculum vitae (including work experiences and extracurricular activities)
  3. Official transcript from the college you are attending and a certificate of your enrollment for the current semester
  4. An essay (approximately 500 words, typed) on your career goals and their contributions to IT and the Korean/American society.
  5. Two letters of recommendation

  Evaluation Criteria

  1. Academic Performance:            30%
  2. Recommendation Letters:          30%
  3. Extracurricular activities:            20%
  4. Essay:                                       20%

 

  Important Dates

  1. Application Deadline:                November 24th
  2. Announcement of Awardees:    December 4th
  3. Award Event:                           December 15th or 16th at KOCSEA Symposium
