Secure & Sustainable & Efficient Cyber-Physical Systems

Cyber physical systems (CPS) are smart and distributed that tightly integrated computing, networking, and physical components. CPS such as automobiles continue evolving to be more computerized, autonomous, and connected as integrating more processers, intelligent sensors, and communication devices. The increasing functionalities and network interoperability transition automotive vehicles from isolated control systems to more open interacting architectures, which results in advancements in operability and safety as well as enables various new services such as vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications. This transition, however, comes with a series of crucial issues in terms of security, sustainability and efficiency. In this talk, I will address these issues, and talk about how to develop theoretical applications and system building blocks for secure, sustainable, and efficient automobiles and transportation systems. About securing CPS and automotive vehicles, I will talk about one work that studies how to enhance system resilience against malicious attacks. About encouraging transportation sustainability, I will present several techniques that support large-scale deployment of electric vehicles. About improving resource (e.g., processors) utilization, I will briefly introduce one work of adaptive utilization control.

Fanxin Kong is currently a post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Computer and Information Science, University of Pennsylvania. He completed his Ph.D. in Computer Science from McGill University in Dec. 2016. His research interests include security, sustainability, and real-time aspects for Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and Internet-of-Things (IoT). The application area of his research includes automobiles and transportation systems, power and energy systems. He has published about 30 research papers at major highly-reputable venues, including ICCPS, IoTDI, RTSS, RTAS, Infocom, etc.. He has also authored 3 books.
