In his congratulatory remarks to the spring 2006 CSE graduates, Dean Satish Udpa emphasized the rapid technological growth taking place in society and the impact that tomorrow's engineers would have on these advancements. “Change is inevitable,” he said. "You will be a part of this change.”

PhD candidate Krerk Piromsopa characterized the department as a place where one could feel at home. Although he admitted to having doubts about leaving Thailand to attend MSU when he stepped off a plane at the Lansing airport on the day of an intense snowstorm in January 2003, he soon realized he had made the right decision.

Here in CSE, he told the audience, faculty exemplify the true definition of the word professor by going beyond problem-specific approaches to learning. “Teaching a student is not just giving the answer to a particular question,” he said. “A professor is one who helps students to identify abilities.”

In his remarks to the graduating class, Bachelor of Science candidate Tom Wolf illustrated the sense of community in the Computer Science and Engineering department.

He described experiences that ranged from building relationships with faculty and staff to sharing a feeling of camaraderie with other dedicated students working through sleepless nights in the labs. “Community doesn't end when you graduate,” he said. “We need to stay connected and maintain the community we've built.”

CSE alumnus Kevin Ohl of Crowe Chizek is a loyal supporter of Michigan State University and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. He is a member of the CSE Strategic Parners Council, a CSE Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, and has given valuable presentations to students in Senior and Freshman Seminar courses.

He urged the graduates to stay involved with their alma mater and addressed some of the critical issues they would face in their personal and professional lives.

He asked graduates to take a moment and thank family and friends. “Keep the people who are important to you in mind as you go further,” he said.

CSE would like to thank Kevin Ohl for giving the spring graduating class the opportunity to choose where to direct his generous donation to the Department. The graduates voted for the donation to be used at the Department's discretion.
