Network File Services

Access to filespace

The department has supports remote access to user and research filesystems via the SMB protocol (used mainly on Windows machines, but supported elsewhere). To connect via Windows, you can use the UNC share name `\\coral.cse.msu.edu\'.  For access to your home directory, the share name would simply be your user-name. For access to other disks, the share name is the disk name. We reccomend you first access your home directory and obtain a list of available shares by browsing.

To connect via Linux and any other Unix supporting `smbmount' and `smbumount', the server name is `coral.cse.msu.edu' and share names are as described abovel. Follow the instructions and HOWTOs that come with your software.

Note to Comcast and other broadband users - Most home broadband ISPs block this type of network traffic.  CSE does not block it.   If you experience problems, your ISP is probably blocking.  The recommended option is Secure FTP (scp).  This is typically never blocked. Another option is using the MSU VPN.  Follow http://vpn.msu.edu for more details.
